After making a $100 million fortune with his early antivirus software in 1994, and caught up in murder-drugs cases in Belize, US millionaire John McAfee on 23rd June, 2021 wrote the last chapter in his tumultuous life story, or so it seems.
John McAfee is dead, found hanging in his prison cell in Spain. His death came hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the U.S. on tax evasion charges on Wednesday.
Over the years, McAfee has been arrested and detained severally while multiple high-caliber weapons as well as ammunition were found on him during his arrest. McAfee had often tweeted a picture of himself and his wife Janice, holding guns in hotel rooms or on his yacht.
His death has raised doubts and alleged complicity by security agencies. The antivirus software pioneer has been on the run since 2012 after being pinned as primary suspect in the murder of his neighbour in Belize.
On July 24, 2019 McAfee while leaving detention using his verified John McAfee Twitter handle (@officialmcafee) wrote, my only “crime is not filing tax returns,” and the rest of the charges is “propaganda by the US government to silence me” and the CIA “attempted to collect ” us. McAfee despite earning millions from consulting work, cryptocurrencies and selling the rights to his life story, was alleged to have deliberately failed to file tax returns.
According to a Reuters news report, Mr McAfee apparently hanged himself in prison. The Catalan authorities said prison officers and medics were unable to revive him.
Before his death, McAfee, 75-year-old British-American entrepreneur was arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020 for tax offenses.
In a tweet on June 16, he said ” My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.” The U.S. authorities believed I had “hidden crypto. I wish I did … My remaining assets are all seized. ”
