The former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin who was convicted Tuesday, of murder in the death of George Floyd, remains in solitary confinement at Minnesota’s only maximum-security prison, in the St. Paul suburb of Oak Park Heights, while he awaits sentencing scheduled for the middle of June.

According to media reports, Chauvin is spending his days in a small cell equipped with a bench with a mattress pad, a combination toilet and sink, and a small shower. This part of the prison is called the isolated unit.

His cell will be monitored directly every half-hour by Guards but CCTV cameras will watch the cell round-the-clock. Reports say that around one-tenth of the prison population is in the isolated unit.

In some 60 days, during which as presentencing investigation and report must be turned in to the court before his hearing, Chauvin will remain in Minnesota’s only maximum-security prison.
