The Senate has directed its relevant committees to investigate the allegations made by the Head of State of Niger, Brig. Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, against Nigeria. This investigation, to be completed within four weeks, aims to use diplomatic and security measures to restore and strengthen the ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger.
The Senate’s decision follows a motion on the need to probe Tchiani’s claims against Nigeria’s sovereignty. Tchiani had accused Nigeria of colluding with France to destabilize his country.
The motion was sponsored by Senator Umar Buba, who expressed deep concern over Tchiani’s serious and unfounded allegations. Buba stated that Tchiani had accused Nigeria of collaborating with France to undermine Niger through a new militia group called Lakurawa, alleged to be operating in Nigeria’s North-West region.
Buba noted that Nigeria and Niger have enjoyed a longstanding, cordial and mutually beneficial relationship, but that diplomatic ties have become strained since the July 2023 coup that disrupted constitutional order in Niger. He said Nigeria, as the ECOWAS Chair, has insisted on the restoration of democracy in Niger.
However, Buba said that despite the establishment of diplomatic channels, Tchiani has chosen to make unsubstantiated public accusations, tarnishing Nigeria’s international image and undermining its sovereignty. The senator emphasized that any deliberate attempt to undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and standing must be condemned, especially in the absence of credible proof.
The motion underscores the Senate’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, preserving its global reputation, and fostering peaceful and cooperative relations with neighboring countries.
