Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Mr Sanusi Garba, at a news conference in Abuja, on Wednesday, confirmed the fears of many Nigerians over the alleged increase in electricity tariff. Garba said the review was necessary and has been conducted in line with the multi-year tariff order for electricity tariff review which will be performed every six months.
The Commission’s chairman also said it is one of the duties of electricity discos to inform their customers of tariff reviews. NERC’s confirmation comes as a shock to many Nigerians as the nation continues to confront an energy crisis amid petrol queues, rising diesel costs and national grid collapses. It is a growing nightmare for companies to run a business successfully says a popular Lagos hotelier Mr. Joseph Abohweyere in a chat with Newsin2 correspondent.
Mr Garba said that the poor state of electricity supply Nigerians currently suffer, and grid collapses, has been because of the increased rate of vandalism of gas pipelines to power plants, plants maintenance and a trip on the 330KV line from Ughelli power plant.
Whether Nigerians like it or not, another upward review of electricity tariff should follow in the next 6 months, this is according to the multi-year tariff order for electricity tariff review.
