Mrs. World is the first beauty pageant for married women, created in 1984, with its sister system Mrs. America, it has become the biggest pageant in the world.

Caroline Jurie a Sri Lankan, won the Mrs. World title last year in a competition held in Las Vegas. But the pageant suffered some image damage this month as Mrs. World Inc announced the resignation and arrest of Mrs. Caroline Jurie following an on-stage fracas where she pulled the crown off the head of Pushpika De Silva, winner of the local segment of the Mrs. World competition, at a Colombo theatre, in Sri Lanka. According to organizers, the stage and several mirrors were smashed in dressing rooms while the fight lasted.

Jurie was charged for “simple hurt and criminal force” and granted bail. The first hearing of the case is fixed for June 28.

Speaking to Press, Jurie said she forced the crown from Pushpika De Silva’s head, because Pushpika being divorced, was ineligible to compete in the April 4 contest. But Pushpika said she is separated from her husband and not divorced.

According to an AP report, Jurie said she was standing against “injustice” because the pageant was “tainted.” She said she wanted to ensure that every contestant had an equal opportunity.

Mrs. World Inc afterward announced, Mrs Jurie’s first runner-up, Ireland’s Mrs. Kate Schneider, as the new Mrs. World 2020.

Sri Lanka will host the final Mrs. World event this year.

To be eligible for the title, contestants must be married. De Silva is legally married but estranged from her husband.
